Power is an abstract phenomenon that has existed throughout the history of humanity. Power and power games are intertwined to such an extent that the nature of power is often dangerous and involves vulnerability and corruption. However, Powerplay is the interaction, the struggle between two powerful beings. It is through this that the complex manipulation of power and power alliances occurs at both an individual and group level. An archetypal representation of the existence of power play within individuals and groups is shown in the film "The Insider" (1999) directed by Michael Mann and in the controversial satirical story "Animal Farm", by George Orwell. Both of these texts explore some aspects of Powerplay. The three main aspects of the powerplay are the interaction between power, intimidation and manipulation (complex manipulation). Michael Mann's "The Insider" revolves around the true story of a whistleblower. Jeffrey Wigand, former research science judge at Brown and Williamsons. As a result he is fired for his poor communication skills, but in reality he was fired because he did not agree with the method of manipulating the nicotine content in cigarettes to increase addiction. “The Insider” is predominantly an individual's struggle for dominance, idealism and is a reflection of Wigand's inherent moral values. At the beginning of the film, Mann used Misen-en-scene to establish Wigand's character without articulating it vocally through the structure of spoken dialogue. Wigand is sitting in his office, completely disoriented by work, busy packing his bags, in contrast to the frenetic office environment. This helps establish his character and reflects his internal feelings in this scene. It is evident that the entities involved in... in the center of the sheet... is a dystopian historical allegory, representing the history of the Soviet Union. Orwell achieved this by drawing parallels to events that occurred in the Soviet Union and incorporating those events into his narrative through characters that mirror historical figures. For example, Napoleon symbolizes Stalin and Snowball Trotsky. The concept of interaction between two powerful beings is explored extensively in the "backyard scene". Snowball suggests the idea of building a windmill, but Napoleon effectively eradicates it by urinating on the plans, as well as labeling Snowball a selfish entity. The arbitration between them, which occurs as a consequence of Napoleon's behavior, illustrates the constant conflict and interaction between them. Thus, this reinforces the notion of interaction between two powerful beings struggling for power.
