In his essay “Causes of Prejudice,” Vincent N. Parrillo states: Blaming others for something that is not their fault is known as scapegoating [also called “victim blaming.” ]. . . There have been many cases in world history where minority groups have been served as scapegoats. . . History is full of examples of people who thought mistreatment of others was right and necessary (Parrillo, Rereading America, 391, 387). The type of scapegoating Parrillo talks about is when a dominant group treats a subordinate group badly, either because their religious beliefs are against them or because they have been raised to believe they are superior. When people have an ideology that they are superior and go to imperialize or colonize a certain area, the people who were colonized would have no say in anything other than following what they are told or there will be consequences such as being killed or be punished. Either they will follow the rules or there will be consequences. An example of this is when whites oppressed blacks during slavery. Whites believed that blacks were inferior, which made them “feel justified in discriminating against them” (387). Other examples similar to this are how another example of scapegoating is discussed by Studs Terkel; in his essay “CP Ellis” where Ellis was trying to find someone to blame for his problems as a working class white male. So he began to blame African Americans for his financial problems. Since he got some influences from his father about the Ku Klux Klan and how “he was the savior of the white people. . . and the only organization that would take care of white people” (400). For this reason Ellis began to admire the Klan and jo...... middle of paper ......photos, captions and camera angles; prejudice through the use of names and titles; bias through statistics and crowd counts; bias due to source control; and through the choice of words and tone, global warming is blown out of proportion and heavily exaggerated in order to pursue the real and subordinate agenda, which is the hatred of capitalism. The Modern Scapegoat We can clearly see how in the early days of slavery blacks were stereotyped, whites performed Minstrel shows imitating and stereotyping blacks about how ignorant they were and all the negative things they felt about them. The media also portrays most blacks as violent; all these stereotypes would cause people to scapegoat the black community. This is because people overgeneralize the community member to what they are not, or even blame them for things others have done..
