IronyFlannery O'Connor's short story "All That Rises Must Converge" is set in the early 1960s in the South. In this story, O'Connor captures the changing discourse between mother and son at a time when white supremacy was slowly deteriorating and integration was beginning to be accepted within the confines of society. The main character Julian, is an educated graduate who, given his education, imposes liberal views on segregation. Because his mother is uneducated and holds racist and ignorant views, Julien constantly looks down on her and always looks for ways to teach his mother a lesson. As the story develops, readers begin to see each character for who they truly are and it turns out that Julien and his mother aren't all that different. By incorporating different types of irony such as situational irony, character irony, and dramatic irony, O'Conner works to demonstrate the theme of "you can't hide from yourself."
