Although he ran around the city, once he realized that the gods had abandoned him, Hector accepted his fate. He appreciated the military values of honor, courage and glory and for them he gave up the possibility of a long life. Hector was held in the highest esteem by his wife, his mother, and his sister-in-law because of his kleos. Everyone gave him some sort of praise in book 24 of the Iliad. In the discussion of kleos Achilles is the definitive example. His mother Thetis told him that he could choose between a short, glorious life in which his name would live forever and a long, dark life in which his name would die after the death of his children. Achilles, driven by a thirst for glory, chose to live a short but triumphant life. Achilles knew that even the strongest and bravest cannot escape death. He found immortality in fame, in his kleos. This is really what these Greek heroes were looking for, a legacy. They may have been dead for a thousand years, but their name will remain in legend forever. This was theirs
