This essay will look at a health policy related to reducing smoking in the UK. The essay will also look at explaining the different approaches and policies. This includes the latest strategies and research used by the Department of Health to support policy. This health policy is discussing and trying to reduce the amount of people smoking in the UK. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of disease and premature death in the UK. The problem that this Department of Health policy (2013) is trying to address is that smoking causes almost 80,000 deaths in England in 2011. Additionally, 9,500 children are admitted to hospital every year with illnesses related to second-hand smoke. Research conducted by ASH (2010) shows that treating illnesses caused by smoking costs the NHS £2.7 billion a year. The NHS also spends over £5 billion treating illnesses and helping smokers to quit with their counsellors, advice and treatments. The NHS (2013) estimated that treating cancer caused by smoking costs £0.6 billion per year, plus it costs £1.5 billion to treat long-term lung conditions. With the development of this policy and NHS stop smoking campaigns, Ash (2013) states that the NHS is saving around £380 million per year. This is due to things like tobacco advertising bans and smoking cessation services which have resulted in fewer people smoking. ASH (2013) states that when research into smoking began in 1948, the amount of men smoking in the UK was 82% and 41% respectively. in women. These statistics remained constant into the 1970s, when they dropped to 51% for men and 41% for women. From 1974 to 1990, the percentage of smokers among men dropped to 30% and among women to 26%. Subsequently all information for policies needs to be analyzed and judged by different authorities and approaches. As smoking among people increased in the 1970s, policies adopted to reduce smoking were helpful and effective.
