Topic > Reading between the lines: The Mosaic of the Annunciation

Three years ago I saw The Mosaic of the Annunciation for the first time, my first reaction was amazement and it still is. Every time I pass by the mosaic of the Annunciation I can't help but take a look at it. There is something in the mosaic that hides and catches my attention every time I pass by. As Sister Hilda gave me some materials for the lesson on icons, I discovered why the Annunciation mosaic always catches my attention. The Annunciation mosaic always invites me to read between the lines in its color and in my life. The Annunciation mosaic in Mount Angel Seminary is located at the main entrance of the Annunciation building which is named after the mosaic. Anyone entering the building cannot pass without seeing the mosaic. The mosaic consists of the Archangel Gabriel on the left side and the Virgin Mary on the right side of the mosaic. The Archangel Gabriel and Mary are facing each other and at the same time look towards the center where there is an image of the Holy Spirit represented by a dove. The Archangel Gabriel is in the position as if he were talking to Mary, we notice this by the position of his hands, feet and the fact that he is facing Mary. Maria is in front of a house or a room as if she were leaving it. She is facing the Archangel Gabriel and holding a spindle in her hand. Archangel Gabriel holds a scroll in his left hand. At the top center of the mosaic is a table with linen, a book and a dove above the book. The beautiful scene invites you to stop for a second and read the message it wants to convey. The mosaic is located in a brightly lit area which allows the mosaic to show the beauty of its colors. I can always notice the gold color in the background, the red in Mary's vestments, and...the center of the card......sometimes I don't know the different ways my brothers react. read between the lines what they really mean when they say something, otherwise I may take it personally. Sometimes it's easier for me to see things as normal or take things for granted and avoid thinking about its meaning and purpose. Sometimes I can be ungrateful towards the things that happen in my life and I forget that maybe God is hidden there waiting for me. I can forget to see the color red that invites me to recognize the divine union that God invites me to every day. Sometimes I can't read the green color in life that wants to tell me about the action and presence of the Holy Spirit in me and in those I meet every day. The colors of Archangel Gabriel and Mary in the mosaic not only tell me something divine, but also teach me to always remember to read between the lines.
