Topic > Lower the age for purchasing and consuming alcohol

Teenagers today do things they know could get them into big trouble, like partying, smoking and drinking. So why would people today have this problem, well it started when the drinking age was raised to 21. However, once they had reached such a high level, adolescents could marry, sign contracts and join the army. That they could also drink, teenagers started going to parties and then coming home drunk so the law wouldn't know they had been drinking (against the 10 year old drinking age). People thought that if they raised the drinking age, drinking would decrease and fewer accidents would occur. Well, it didn't go as planned, but it helped in some states. For others the law hasn't really helped. Some states have made a proposal to lower the drinking age, all are similar, but one state in particular that is different from lowering the age is Missouri. As GK Chesterton said: “The free man owns himself. It can be damaged by eating or drinking; he can ruin himself by gambling. If he does so he is certainly a fool and may perhaps be a damned soul; but if he does not do so, he is no more a free man than a dog. So lowering the drinking age would make people free to harm themselves. College presidents agree that changing the drinking age would help. John McCardell argued that it would help stop binge drinking in colleges, because they wouldn't want to go to small places and drink. McCardell argued that the teenagers tried a sip of alcohol when they were between the ages of 10 and 15. McCardell debated in his home state with presidents of other colleges. Who agrees with him that the drinking age should be lowered, so college students would stop binge drinking and maybe college drinking...middle of paper...teach teenagers how to manage the things they consume. Lowering the drinking age from 21 wouldn't be a bad thing at all. Teenagers have been drinking forever, the law hasn't stopped them, so what will help them? Teens will still drink whether the law is in effect or not. Parents know or hopefully know, most adults who have teenagers want to help them so they don't harm someone or themselves. They can't with the law in place because they could be in big trouble. Parents can be charged with child endangerment and have their children taken away. Knowing this the age should be lowered so this doesn't happen. Teenagers could drink at home without driving, when they are at home they feel more comfortable. Then know that you need to worry about the teenager getting drunk and trying to drive. So ultimately, lowering the age could and would help people in the long run.
