The French and American Revolutions arose from similar motivations to improve their governments. However, they differ at other levels based on their actions and results. Both the American and French Revolutions wanted its citizens to be considered equal, as well as allowing them to enjoy certain natural rights. Sovereignty, however, is viewed differently by the two parties. The main reason for each revolution is different, but both have the same end results of a declaration document. Both documents are composed based on Enlightenment thinker John Locke's Second Treatise on Government and Jean Jacques Rousseau's Social Contract.
