LawyerLawyers function as both advocates and consultants to each other. As lawyers, they embody their clients in court by providing supporting evidence. As consultants, they advise their clients on their legal rights and obligations. Lawyers (also known as advocates and consultants) can interpret laws and must apply them to a specific situation. Lawyers spend much of their work time researching precedents, which are past explanations of laws and the history of court rulings based on that law. Precedents are used to support an attorney's case in court. Each law firm has its own public libraries and documents, computer databases and the Internet that are available to lawyers for research. A large number of lawyers have their own private practices dealing with all types of legal issues. Some go to work for law firms, government agencies and larger companies. What initially attracted me to being a lawyer, if I can be completely honest, is the salary they earn. Coming from a poor background, being a lawyer was one of the few careers that was talked about while I was growing up that made a lot of money. But as I grew up I discovered that there are different types of lawyers such as environmental and family lawyers who earn less than a corporate lawyer but fight for what I think are good causes. ------------------------Famous Contributors Thurgood Marshall served as chief legal counsel to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and fought for the rights of people of color and for the end of segregation in schools, the most famous and talked about case being Brown v. They are also responsible for responding to 911 emergency calls and investigating cases such as domestic violence, home invasion, etc. Uniformed police officers have broad law enforcement responsibilities. They wear a uniform that is easily recognizable by the public. They respond to emergency calls and carry out regular patrols. Police departments are typically structured into geographic districts, with uniformed officers dispersed to patrol a particular area. Officers from large agencies regularly patrol with a partner. During patrols, officers are on the lookout for any signs of criminal activity and are always ready to conduct searches or arrest suspected criminals.
