Jennifer loved working for the Bowie Animal Shelter. He had been working there for about a year and a half and every day was new and different. Most of the shelter animals were beloved pets who had somehow escaped from their families, so these families sought them out, and the family and pet reunions were wonderful. Lots of hugs and kisses and licks and purrs, and "It's so good to see you again" and "We thought we'd never find you." Many very happy people and their pets go home together. Sometimes, however, after a while there was a pet whose family had not come looking for it, so these animals were given up for adoption to go to a new family. There was still plenty of hugging, kissing, licking and purring as a family discovered its newest member and a pet found its new forever home. Sometimes, when a family for some reason could no longer keep their pet, they would bring them to the shelter so that Jennifer and the rest of the staff could find them a new home. These times were quite sad but Jennifer always knew that happiness would follow as soon as the animal found a new family. Occasionally a family would feel so bad about no longer being able to care for their pet that they would leave it at the back door of the shelter overnight and Jennifer would find them in the morning when she came in. So first thing, when he got to work, he went in, hung up his keys, and put his lunch in the refrigerator. Then he went to each cage to say good morning to each individual cat and dog. There was a lot of tail wagging and head banging as everyone was happy to see her again. He knew the names that had been given to each one, that they were all ready for breakfast... in the middle of a sheet of paper... big green eyes and he had an overwhelming feeling that maybe he shouldn't try to move the cat. Maybe the cat would be fine the way it was. After all, they seemed to be very good friends. What harm could it do to let her stay with him? He held the door open as the dog and cat entered. Once inside the two turned to face her as a unit and the dog sat down and the cat was still in its place. As she turned to walk out and close the door, Jennifer looked over her shoulder and for a moment felt that the cat had nodded its head as Jennifer had instructed, almost as if it was giving her permission to leave. Jennifer quickly closed the door and shook her head. Breakfast for the other cats and dogs would have to wait a little longer because she would have to call Bill, her supervisor, right away. Something very strange was happening here.
