Nigerians, especially men, love football; I have yet to meet a Nigerian male who doesn't like football or own a couple of his favorite team's jerseys. According to a survey, as many as 83% of Nigerians – around 179 million people – show interest in sport and 65% practice it. Football is undoubtedly a unifying factor in Nigeria. Nigeria, although not very large in terms of size, but huge in terms of population, is highly segregated, based on religion, tribe and even language. Yet they unite, forgetting all their differences and difficulties when that whistle blows for at least the next 90 minutes. I saw a similar situation in the movie when the YMCA baseball team played the Japanese team. Even though there were conflicts within the company due to the treaty, emotional stress caused by the team's disbandment, oppression by the Japanese, and even the betrayal of a friend who attempted to kill his friend's father; despite all this, at the kick-off all those differences were put aside and everyone simply became Koreans rooting for their country. It instilled in them a sense of pride in both their team and theirs
