Most of society will claim to support equal rights for homosexuals. Ask the same members if they support gay marriage and they become hesitant. Recently the majority of Americans will vote in favor of the constitutional amendment, which bans gay marriage. Ironically, these same Americans believe in equal rights for the gay community just like any other heterosexual citizen. In my personal opinion, gay marriage should be accepted globally. The biggest misconception about this hot topic is that those in the gay community have a "choice" to feel attracted to but they simply choose to be gay. Just as heterosexuals don't "choose" who they're attracted to, homosexuals don't either. Numerous anti-gay groups claim that "homosexuality is preventable and treatable" and that "living as a homosexual is not as carefree as often portrayed in the entertainment media." How can someone with no personal experience of being gay say that homosexuality can be "changed", or even whether a homosexual can be happy or not? What about the research conducted that proves homosexuality is purely genetic? a life full of prejudice and discrimination. Even I, being a bisexual individual, still receive “advice” on how to “save myself” and am often told that “there is still time to save myself.” Homosexuality is often considered purely an issue. sex, often called “sexual perversion”. The reality is that homosexuality is varied. Sex, in any committed relationship, is a means of expressing love. This is true in both a heterosexual and homosexual relationship. Love is unconditional. Being gay represents who that person is and shapes their identity. Instead of trying to understand it, heterosexual... middle of paper... same-sex couples cannot provide the proper environment to raise a child. Well, take a look at who many of these critics allow to marry and raise children: murderers, child molesters, convicted criminals of all stripes, and so on. Yet this is preferred to a gay couple free from criminal records who actually embrace morality? If a same-sex couple can provide a loving and caring home, then where is the harm done? The child, as well as love for the child, must be a priority in every family, regardless of the gender of the parents. Gay marriage is defined as a legal union between members of the same sex. Ten percent of Americans are denied the right to marry because of their sexual orientation. As a country we must move away from illogical reasoning, whether based on ignorance or prejudice. We must recognize every individual's civil right to marry their life partner.
