The Black Codes secured the employment of blacks by making them sign a release stating that they would work for at least one year (Black Codes). Even though the Union had emerged victorious and four million slaves had been legally freed, blacks still faced many Americans who discriminated against them and wanted to make things worse (black codes). During the Reconstruction era, many new amendments were created including the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments. The 13th Amendment states that slavery is prohibited. Some whites did not want to follow this principle and attempted to circumvent it by creating black codes. The 14th Amendment says black men are citizens and the 15th says black men can vote. The Emancipation Proclamation may have stated that slaves were free, but that didn't mean all Americans believed it. All the progress of blacks toward freedom caused a revolution to break out in the South. This can be compared to how Huck changed his opinions towards Jim while most others did not. Huck also knew that if anyone knew he had helped a black man, they would report him too. The South was afraid of what would happen if blacks lived among each other with equal rights
