They would do anything for a quick buck. Corley leaves Lenehan to go be with a young woman who will pay him to date. Lenehan goes for a long walk, finds a cafe and decides to get something to eat. As he eats, he begins to contemplate his and Corley's life and how Corley is with a girl who basically sells herself for a little money. The thought of this shocked Lenehan: “This vision made him acutely aware of his poverty of purse and spirit. He was tired of wandering, of pulling the devil by the tail, of travel and intrigue” (Dubliners page 54). he sat down and contemplated his options at the bar for a while: “Less tired of life, Less defeated in spirit. He might be able to settle down in some private corner and live happily if only he could meet some good girl with a simple mind and a little quick wit” (Dubliners p. 55). Lenehan thinks carefully about this question and yet cannot bring himself to do anything about his situation. simply return to Corley and continue as is. Lenehan has found no escape from his unsatisfied thoughts, plans and friends, so he will not find happiness until he acts on his desires.
