Bewitched written by Ueda Akinari follows a young man haunted by a demon disguised as a woman. When analyzing this story, there are important points about the roles of each gender, the relationship between the sexes, and the importance of meeting social expectations during this time in Japan. A man must be strong, robust and hardworking. There is little need for education. For example, Taro is the eldest son of Oya no Takesuke and is a well-trained fisherman. He was taught to be a fisherman by his father who is constantly impressed by him. He also helps run the family business. Taro wakes up at dawn to watch over the fishermen of the family business. Taro is introduced to Toyo-o first to show what a man should be. Unlike his brother, Toyo-o, who is what a man should not be. He is an effeminate individual who prefers to study rather than devote time to the family business. The education he sought was useless in his father's eyes. Oya no Takesuke considered Toyo-o nothing more than a hindrance, and would have given his horrible son to another family, if he hadn't been so ashamed of what the family might think of him because of his son. Oya no Takesuke also believes himself to be "clueless and irresponsible" and even irresponsible with money. So, like all good fathers, Oya no Takesuke allows him to be whatever he wants, as long as it's just a burden on Taro. Toyo-o is often referred to as young and good-looking. It is his good looks that attract the attention of the handsome Manago, who is actually a demon with otherworldly powers, and his effeminate quality and lack of discipline are what makes him weak to Manago's charms. During this time period, equality between men and women was unheard of. Women had their social role... at the center of the card... I never mentioned any mourning for her. However, Toyo-o “suffers no ill effects” and lives a long, healthy life. Tomiko was punished even though Toyo-o demonstrated weakness throughout the entire story. He has learned of Manago's supernatural nature, but still has a relationship with her. Just by being a man, he somehow escapes any negative effects from the event. While an innocent girl dies despite not being involved willingly. In conclusion, by analyzing Bewitched we can learn a lot about the treatment of women and what is expected of each gender. That a man to be a man should never give up on a woman regardless of her beauty. A man who is not hard working and masculine is worthless. Women who go against what they should be are punished. The moral of the story is that to be happy and live a meaningful life people must conform to their society.
