Pike of Leota. During the first half of the story he tells Mrs. Fletchers “Mrs. Pike is a lovely girl, you would be crazy about her” but in the second half of the story he says “she goes around acting like she thinks she is Mrs. God” (Welty 1097, 1102). It had only been a week and she had gone from saying he was adorable to arrogant. This also applies to Billy, the Pikes' son. At first Leota says "he couldn't hurt anything" but then he says "that bad, naughty little boy here, he's under my feet every minute of the day and he even talks back to me" (Welty 1096, 1102). His jealousy of Mrs. Pike receiving that reward led Leota to change his perception of them. She doesn't even care that Mrs. Pike helped capture a man wanted for raping four women, she reduces them to "worth one hundred and twenty-five dollars apiece" or rather assumed that's what Mrs. Pike was.
