Food is essential for all inhabitants of the planet. This is why food safety is always a crucial issue. It means life or death for many people. Our ability to feed the entire planet is often questioned. The root cause of why there are so many people suffering from hunger is not always easy to understand. We see huge amounts of excessive waste in richer countries, while many live in poverty and die from lack of food in other countries. The disconnect seems to always be present, no matter how much aid is provided or food is grown. The problem is not always the lack of food, but above all the lack of wealth. You have to have money to eat it, it's not a given right. Food is a question of money and its accessibility depends on its price. It is obvious that this is not being achieved at this time. Approximately 795 million people do not have enough food to be considered safe. The link of this problem with poverty is clear. The way the food system is set up is a large and complex issue that is negatively impacting the ability to feed the world's poor. The supply/demand relationship for food breaks down, causing a disconnect between the food provided and the ability to provide this food to the people who need it. Increasing responsibility and awareness regarding climate and the environment also leads to increased prices in the food industry. New solutions need to be found to create a sustainable food industry. Godfrey examines many of these solutions in his argument, but their cost is not examined. While there is hope that farming and farming can be done in an environmentally friendly manner, this does not solve the problem of feeding the world's poorest populations.
