Can you live in the illusion you create in an attempt to escape the reality of your life choices? The book, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, is a novel narrated by a character named Gene. In the novel Gene struggles with the memory of him causing his best friend Finny to fall from a tree. This fall ruins Finny's athletic future, however Finny is unaware that Gene caused his fall should not confess Finny Even if confessing to Finny would have hurt him deeply, Gene should have confessed because it would clear his conscience, it would make Finny accept the reality, and Finny would never die Even if revealing the truth to Finny would to hear Gene better, would have deeply upset Finny. At one point Gene attempts to confess to Finny, however Finny immediately rejects his confession saying "Of course you didn't. Damn fool. Sit down, you damn idiot."(70) This only increases Gene's doubts about whether or not he should confess....
