Topic > Comparison between "After you, my dear Alphonse" and...

These two stories show two different types of discrimination, one story presents a hostile environment to a racial group of people because of their ethnicity while the other reveals a world obsessed with equal rights for all that slowly dissolves our right to express ourselves. Shirley Jackson's "After You, My Dear Alphonse" shows an extreme form of racial prejudice and bigotry displayed through the discriminatory messages sent subtly in the form of a casual conversation from a white mother to an African American child but without knowing if it was true meaning because then he simply saw it as an innocent conversation. "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. describes a future in which the entire world population is average in every sense, everyone is forcibly compromised by devices to prevent the person from "abusing" their intelligence or strength to improve others intellectually or athletically. . "After You, My Dear Alphonse" shows a world in which a once oppressed people rose up from servitude, although despite their triumphs against their oppressors they were still despised. Jackson placed this idea in the context of a domestic situation where a place that should be safe is hostile towards someone who is just a child simply because of the color of their skin. In 'Harrison Bergeron' the nations of the world began a crusade to cleanse the world of discrimination of any kind, so they began a purge of all characteristics that make man different and "more than satisfactory", thus perpetuating a society that praises the average, adores mediocrity and calls originality heresy. One finds himself in a world loaded with prejudice and the other loaded with equality. In the universe of 'After You, My Alphonse, racism towards African-Americans...... middle of paper...... situations but to be treaded with caution. “Harrison Bergeron” shows us that there is no higher price and no better reward than the ability to express oneself through one's own will, without fear of censorship. Individuality is a characteristic that makes Man original and unique from each other. Humans are genetically unequal in terms of talents and abilities, however hard work and dedication make up for these missing genes, traits fueled by the desire to be the best they can through competition, the desire to excel, or the desire to be different. The true meaning of a fair world is one in which man is seen and judged according to God and law, without prejudice towards occupation, social status, wealth or talents. We are imperfect, we are imperfect beings, we are held back by only one obstacle to perfection, that of free will. You are willing to trade it for perfection??
