Presocratic philosophyIt is important to be able to distinguish scientific, philosophical, religious and speculative explanations and causes from each other. To be able to discern the four we must first understand what they are and what their purpose is. The first type of Presocratic thinking of explanation is scientific, although the Presocratics did not begin to think scientifically until much later in their lives. search for truth, due to the pre-Socratics often not using their senses; as in observation. For an explanation to be scientific, a person must draw their own conclusions from the observation and be able to test it to prove it true or not true. Philosophical explanation is similar to scientific explanations in that they also have a subdivision for explanations of different things in the universe, for example physics in the scientific world and metaphysics in the world of philosophy. The most important part of philosophical explanation is how philosophers originate their ideas through logic and reason, and later find evidence to support their claims. Philosophical explanations differ from scientific explanation because philosophy does not always seek their truths through observation. Many philosophers find knowledge of the world through logical deduction and what is known as rationalism. Religious explanation is very different from scientific and philosophical explanation and, if misunderstood, can create great conflict. Religious explanation does not originate from observation or logical deduction, but from the belief that there is knowledge that we do not know about higher beings who create and sometimes control us humans and the universe in which we live. Religious explanation is where some of the first philosophical statements originate… in the middle of the… fish card.” This is empiricism because of Anaximander's observation and reasoning that children are helpless and cannot survive on their own, so early children would need something to protect them until they develop. A modern example of empiricism would be the scientific method. Where hypotheses are drawn from reasoning and then experimented and tested with observation. Free will is an example of determinism that pre-Socratic philosophers struggled with greatly in their time. What characterizes free will as determinism is the sense of what controls our actions; us humans or a higher force. A modern example of determinism would be the cause-effect relationship of sleep. Tiredness makes us sleep and the effect is that our body and mind are rejuvenated. Empiricism and determinism play an important role in how we understand what we see around us.
