“If the bee disappeared from the face of the Earth, humans would only have four years to live.” This questionable statement by the brilliant scientist Albert Einstein may evidently be right. In my class we were asked to choose a topic to research, so I chose colony collapse disorder because I believe it is a neglected epidemic. The UDSA reported that “Colony collapse disorder (CCD) is a serious problem that threatens the health of honey bees and the economic stability of commercial beekeeping and pollination operations in the United States. Despite a number of claims in the general and scientific media, researchers have not identified one or more causes of CCD. Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) is a term used to describe the mass disappearance of worker bees from the hive. The result is the collapse of the colony and the presence of insufficient workers to maintain it. The CCD dates back to October 2006, when bee keepers began reporting losses of 30-90% of their hives. While colony losses are not unexpected, especially during the winter, the magnitude of losses is significant. The main symptom of CCD is the presence of very small or no adult bees in the hive, but with a live queen and no dead bee bodies present. It is normal for the hive to still contain honey and also contain immature bees or brood. One possible reason for CCD is Varroa mites, a bee parasite that transmits the virus. Cases of Varroa mites found in hives affected by CCD have often been reported. Although CCD was first reported in October 2006, similar cases of CCD have occurred. In the scientific literature there are several ri...... half of the article...... 6The best action the public can take to improve the survival of bees is to not use pesticides indiscriminately. In particular, the public should avoid applying pesticides during the midday hours, when honey bees are more likely to be out foraging for nectar and pollen on flowering plants. Additionally, the public can plant pollinator-friendly plants, plants that are good sources of nectar and pollen such as red clover, foxglove, bee balm, joe-pye grass and other native plants. Initially, I didn't really care about bees until after I got this assignment. Even though I may be allergic to bees, they help my daily life. I don't want food prices to go up because we can't save some bees. We spend trillions on protection, when we don't have war. How about we spend a few million to save the bees, and possibly save humans.
