The savior child will also be free from the disease from which the existing child suffers; this may mean that the rescued child may have a better quality of life than if he or she suffered from the disease. In addition to the positives and negatives, some may view “savior siblings” as a cruel process for the savior child. The child may grow up with the feeling of not being born for himself, of not being wanted or of being born only as a "spare part" for his brother. Another ethical debate might concern the ability to give informed consent. It can be argued that a child cannot be fully aware of what is happening until they reach a certain age (in South Australia, the age of medical consent is 16) and therefore cannot express their full consent informed for medical procedures up to the age of 16 (MIGA, 2011).
