Creationism and Evolution Taught in Schools Introduction:Education about evolution and creationism in the public school system has been questionable. Charles Darwin published his conclusions on evolution in 1859. This profoundly changed the teaching of science in the public school system (Armenta, 1). Numerous court cases have been brought against the teaching of evolution. Due to conservative religious legislators, a ban was placed on the teaching of evolution and equal treatment between evolutionism and creationism or intelligent design (Armenta, 1). The court case that sparked the controversy was the 1925 Scope case in Dayton, Tennessee. Numerous important court cases followed; Epperson, et al. v. Arkansas, McLean v. Arkansas Board of Education, Edwards v. Aguillard, and Frailer v. Tangipahoa Parish Board of Education (Armenta, 1). In Louisiana and Tennessee, a bill has been passed that allows teachers in the public school system to teach evolution along with creationism even if the principal and superintendent do not agree. The author of the bill believes that it will help students improve critical thinking skills and pupils will learn to be respectful of other students' beliefs (Jones, 1).
