1. In the article, and based on your research, what were some of the factors that contributed to the accident? Some of the factors that contributed to the accident include pilot error, instrument landing system (ILS), and cockpit resource management (CRM). According to (Christina, 2013), pilot Lee Kang-Kook had a total of 9,793 hours of flying experience on aircraft such as the Boeing747, but had only spent 43 hours flying on the Boeing777 9 times. It was also the first time he attempted to land at San Francisco Airport with the Boeing777. He was in training to get the Boeing777 license. The accident demonstrated that handling the aircraft by an inexperienced pilot could be risky. According to (McCown, 2013), the Instrument Landing System (ILS) was not turned on and the crew was unable to use the instrument to align the aircraft with the runway. This caused the crew to fly above the standard height for the approach, necessitating a sudden drop in both speed and altitude as the aircraft approached the airport. When the crew was decreasing altitude and speed, they allowed their speed to drop significantly below their approach speed, causing further loss of altitude and the aircraft crashing. This was due to the crew not using the aircraft's automatic throttle system to control speed. As stated by (Bailey, 2013), Cockpit Resource Management (CRM) is important during flights to ensure safety. Another pilot named Lee Jung Min was the training instructor of Lee Kang-Kook's Boeing777. According to (Irving, 2013), Lee Jung Min had 3,220 experiences on the Boeing777. Both failed to work together as a team to spot problems such as the angle of approach, altitude and speed of the plane which ultimately led to the crash. If they had communicated with each other, the c...... middle of paper...... would have been sold at a very low price for a limited period of time. If one is lucky, they might save even more on airline tickets. LCC also has its weaknesses. First of all, it is not possible to assign seats. Many LCCs offer seats to customers on a first-come, first-served basis. For travelers traveling in a group, it is highly likely that they will not be seated together. Secondly, most LCC flights have a limited baggage allowance of 15kg. Customers will be charged additional fees if their baggage exceeds 15kg. Thirdly, there may be delays in delivery times. Since LCC operates the same routes back and forth a few times each day, small delays due to delivery times may accumulate and cause delays of up to an hour or more behind schedule. Finally, when a flight is cancelled, LCC will award minimum compensation as required by international aviation laws. (Guide, undated)
