The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was a court-like body created in the South Africa after the end of apartheid and its atrocities. Anyone who believed they had been a victim of violence or abuse during the apartheid era could come forward and be heard by TRC members and judges. Those who had committed violence during the apartheid era could provide testimony and request amnesty from the prosecutor's office for the things they had done. The TRC, despite having some flaws, was a stepping stone towards justice and democracy in South Africa. Founded in 1995 by highly recognized people such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, (President), Dr Alex Boraine (Vice President), Mary Burton and many others. The TRC was made up of three committees: the Human Rights Violations Committee, the Amnesty Committee and the South African Reparation and Rehabilitation Committee. The Committee on Human Rights Violations offered people who have suffered serious human rights violations the opportunity to tell their stories TRC. He investigated serious human rights violations and discovered how and why they happened. The committee investigated human rights violations that occurred between 1961 and 1994 and approximately 21,000 statements were made and recorded. These hearings took place across South Africa from 1996 to 1998. The Amnesty Committee offered people who had committed human rights violations to apply for amnesty if they told the truth. Anyone could ask for amnesty if there was a political motivation for what they did. To get amnesty, you have to tell the committee everything you know happened between March 1960 and May 1994. The South African Reparations and Rehabilitation Committee has......half of the document...... vement as similar to those committed by the apartheid regime” said Thabo Mbeki (New Generation History Learners Book- Grade 12 2014- page 343). The Liberation Movement committed human rights violations in defense of those committed by the apartheid government. This is an unjust justice since the liberation movement did it in self-defense. Another limitation of the TRC. In conclusion, I believe that the TRC was successful in terms of its goal of creating a more united South Africa and exposing the horrors and atrocities of apartheid, but it failed as many killers walked free and most of the evidence had been tampered with. with from the NP. Not everything that was said before the TRC was entirely true, different versions of the truth were told especially by the NP. So I think the TRC had the potential to be excellent, it did what needed to be done but it wasn't done thoroughly.
