Topic > Punishment in Dante's Inferno - 865

In this seventh circle of hell there were three areas of rings with three types of punishment. The sins were about violence which was violence towards other people, violence towards oneself and violence towards God. In my opinion, Dante was able to successfully employ the Christian world based on the difference of punishments. For example, the punishment of the first ring of the Seventh Circle of Hell was to boil the sinner in rivers of blood against those who were against others. In the second ring of the Seventh Circle of Hell, sinners were transformed into trees and received pain from the sinner who was against themselves. In the last ring of the Seventh Circle of Hell, the punishment for sinners was the desert of burning sand and fire for sinners who opposed the God. Also there was Brunetto Latini guilty of his love, because he was homosexual. He wrote in literary terms about sodomites, so he was against God and nature. Through this meeting, the theories of the Christian framework and the deep understanding of the Christian faith were shown. Moving on to the next circle of hell, Virgil and Dante entered the eighth circle of hell, known as the Malebolge “Evil Pouches.” There were ten bags of this circle and each bag represented each type of crime and punishment. Furthermore, Dante describes the Eighth Circle of Hell as a large structure with walls, wells and bridges. Through this circle, I think the author described hell as a city, because hell as walls, architecture and many types of people. In canto XXXIII there was Archbishop Ruggieri who was against Ugolina. They were punished by freezing their entire body except their head on the surface of the lake in the Second Ring of the Ninth Circle of Hell. The reason why Ugolina and Ruggieri went to hell is because Ruggieri imprisoned Ugolina, her two children and her nephew. More importantly, Dante wants to show readers humanity's capacity for evil and cruelty
