Topic > I like that you are still by Pablo Neruda - 933

In the poem “I like that you are still”, Pablo Neruda expresses his unattainable heart by calling his loved one. He described his love towards his loved one without saying a word, understanding her feelings from her silence, and acts accordingly to make her feel that he cares here. True feelings of love remain the same even if no response comes from the other side. Acting selflessly just to get a single word out of his mouth or a little smile on his face that makes him feel happy, and this poem is about that passionate love. The tone of this poem is heavy although it changes a bit at the end. Words such as absent, distant, melancholy, silence, and dead set the depressing tone of this poem. Those words represent the feelings of a potentially vulnerable and heartbroken person (in this case the person is Neruda) who is afraid of losing their loved one. Neruda is afraid and sad that his loved one might one day disappear from his life, but he doesn't really know why. He's trying to figure out what the reason could be, but he doesn't seem to get a response from the other end because she's silent. For example, Neruda writes: “it's as if I were absent / and you hear me from afar and my voice doesn't touch you” (1-2). He also writes: «And let me speak with your silence» (12). This definitely shows the point that he is calling her, trying to contact her but no response is coming from the other end. He becomes so desperate that he is even ready to speak with his silence. The heavy tone that is set from the beginning is evident in all five stanzas of the poem. In the first stanza, Neruda writes “It seems as if your eyes have flown away” (3) which certainly captures the feelings of… middle of paper… “absent”. Therefore the thought could be interpreted as her absence and unresponsiveness making him feel like she is dead and this makes him sandy and lonely. Love is something that people often realize after losing it. When someone has it, they don't realize the importance it has in their life. However, once it is gone or taken away from them, then they realize how precious the thing they had was. Then they try to fix it. If they are unlucky they may never be able to fix it. This fact can be seen in Neruda's poem “I like that you stand still” and also in our current one. Therefore, the suggestion is to try to appreciate your loved ones before losing them forever.
