Plea Bargains are very popular on the popular television series Law and Order. If a random episode is chosen, there is a high probability that the show's lawyers have offered a plea deal. Although many people believe that the media distorts the public's understanding of how often plea deals occur, however, this is actually an appropriate portrayal. According to Heumann, approximately 10% of criminal cases actually continue to trial (Heumann, 1975). Likewise, as stated by Menkel-Meadow, plea deals are the reason why there can be congestion in the courts, but low numbers of criminals are actually incarcerated (Menkel-Meadow, 2005). effective or not, as far as achieving a desirable outcome is concerned.
