Elizabeth Bishop's vibrant, descriptive language transcends time to appeal to every reader in all of her poems. What I admire most about Elizabeth's poetry is its combination of detailed, imaginative description and intriguing insight. Bishop has a keen eye for detail and transforms the visual images he observes into poetic language. It deals with a range of themes including death, loss, childhood, domesticity and the resilience of the human spirit. Bishop's poems are rooted in personal experience, but have a genuine universal appeal. The poem “Sestina” focuses on a child's experience of tragedy and loss and reveals how children are extremely sensitive to the world around them, without fully understanding what is really happening. The poem is seen through the eyes of a child, which makes the reader connect more to the poem. Unfortunately, Bishop herself experienced loss as a child and captures the terrible absence of her parents in the poem. The title “Sestina” refers to a form of poetic writing, it is an ancient formal type of poetry. “Sestina” is one of my favorite poems I have read so far. There were many aspects of the poem that I enjoyed. I admire the main feature of the poetic form, the six repeated final words, “grandmother”, “little girl”, “house”, “stove”, “almanac” and “tears”. The poem opens with an autumn theme, "September rain...in the dying light," which sets the scene and mood for the rest of the poem. It is set in a kitchen and described as a normal domestic scene. As the poem continues, we realize that something is wrong and that “the grandmother laughs and talks to hide her tears”. The sense of pain filters through the child's innocence, the child thinks that her grandmother's tears are through... paper... her mind is set on returning home." This could make it clear that for some people home is not the first place of refuge, but rather the last. This poem also refers to Bishop as he did not have much connection with his beloved family, as the poem conveys an inspiring message for human beings, that they can. overcome difficult situations and find comfort, even if it takes a long time to do so. To conclude, I appreciated Elizabeth Bishop's poetry for her unique style of asking questions about man and life, her ability to discover universal truths. it's truly impressive. I particularly liked the way he manages to turn something really simple into the extraordinary. His famous eye for detail and extremely vivid descriptions give his poetry a powerful visual quality, drawing the reader into the world he describes. . I highly recommend everyone read at least one poem by Elizabeth Bishop..
