Written Analysis Case – Product Development IDEOIDEO must decide whether to shorten the product development process to meet the client's timeframe or request an extension of the product launch so that IDEO has enough time to carry out a complete development process. IDEO's client, Handspring, requested that IDEO create a competitor to the Palm V, which IDEO helped develop. IDEO is tasked with reconfiguring a handheld-like product that meets Handspring's desire to provide a low-cost handheld product with interchangeable cards and an improved aesthetic design that can appeal to a broader customer base. Dennis Boyle, former team leader of the Palm V project and future leader of the Visor project, must decide whether or not to commit to Handspring's short development period, which would inevitably lead to shortcuts in development. IDEO's culture emphasizes the importance of expressing individuality within a team-based setting. Employees are encouraged to decorate personal areas of the office, move around while working, and communicate with other employees. This clan culture plays a significant role in the innovation process. IDEO's competitive advantage resulting from its unique approach to innovation and development cannot be sustained without the efforts of the entire team working together. Decision making must therefore reflect the overall company culture and incorporate input from the entire team (Christensen, 4). Therefore, Boyle's decision on whether to create the Visor in a short amount of time should also include input from the team to align with the company's overall culture. IDEO's approach to the product design process is through a collective team effort that encourages suggestions, multiple prototypes, and... middle of the paper... depends not only on Boyle, but also on his team. It is critical that Boyle consults with his team before making this decision, as the entire team will be affected if IDEO decides to undertake the Visor project.
