INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY In second language learning, instructors and teachers have put a lot of effort into using various techniques and methods to ensure their students have a better understanding of the content conveyed. However, these techniques and skills would be more effective if students' learning styles were taken into consideration. According to Felder & Spurlin (2005), different students have different learning styles. Reid (2000) stated that learning styles can be classified into three broad areas: cognitive, affective and perceptual learning style. Most of the previous studies conducted discussed the preferred learning style in general and provided different perspectives on the way students learn. . However, in this study, the main focus is placed on perceptual learning style which refers to auditory, visual, tactile, kinesthetic, group and individual learners. These types of learners refer to those who learn a language most effectively by listening, seeing, hands-on experience, learning with others, and learning alone respectively. Hence, this study will provide specific preference of students towards perceptual learning style. PROBLEM STATEMENT Learning styles are a performance pattern that every student uses in the learning process so it is a well-known fact that different students have different learning styles. The larger the number of students in a class implies that more attention should be paid to student differences. Teachers or instructors should not ignore students' differences, especially in the sense of their preferred perceptual learning style. Furthermore, differences in race and educational background wo...... middle of paper ...... auditory and kinesthetic preferences and also two social aspects of learning: group and individual preferences. METHODOLOGY In conducting this study, a number of respondents be chosen from among the second year students majoring in English language studies at UKM, Bangi. This study uses the quantitative method using the questionnaire form of previous research. RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS This study will adapt the Reid Perceptual Learning Style Preferences Questionnaire (PLSPQ). The questionnaire consists of 25 items and each of them is related to visual, auditory, kinesthetic, group and individual learning style preferences. It was the most widely used learning styles instrument among non-native English speakers (DeCapua & Wintergerst, 2004). It has become one of the most popular tools for examining ESL/EFL students' learning styles, which is related to this study.
