Puritan community. They do everything as a whole and that's what they believe. In this article it says, “Such an adamant society obviously implies that any form of individuality will be considered subversive and dangerous” (Bonnet 32). The root cause of this whole process is a combination of individual and social passivity. The character Abigail is driven by lust for Proctor and jealousy of Elizabeth Proctor, which was discussed earlier in the text. The article also states that “Every single man can avail himself of the opportunity to weaken his personal revenge on his fellow man. At the same time that the decayed state of things becomes a social issue, in which justice is also infected by the same process and is in turn distorted” (Bonnet 32). Even though Elizabeth/Goody Proctor is angry with her husband, she still tries to forgive him. Goody Proctor is the ideal Christian you might think of. She never committed sin and never lied until she tried to protect her husband's social position. Unfortunately, this is really bad timing. Although he lies in McCarthy Era: Communist in America/The Salem Witch Trails: Hysteria in Colonial America, he says the play also focuses on individuals and their motivations for the role they played in the witch trials, religious morality had a lot to say with comedy (Hastings 141). Religion is very important to the people of the city. They attend church all the time and the people of the city are ruled by the people of the justice system. The people in the church are mostly men, which as you can see, men were a bigger factor than women. Gender equality did not yet exist in 1692. Women were treated less than men. They were classified as stay-at-home moms and those who cook and clean for their husbands while they are at home
