Change is universal and non-stop. We experience it every day, but probably not for as long as Gregor Samsa experienced it one morning. In the story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka many changes occur, both physical and mental. Of course, Gregor transforms from a human into an insect, but there's a lot more change than that. Gregor's family, consisting of Gregor, father, mother and his sister Grete, goes through a change as a whole and as individuals. As a result of Gregor's physical metamorphosis, his sister and father undergo physical and mental metamorphoses. Gregor's sister Grete undergoes a metamorphosis due to the "loss" of her brother. We see her change her attitude towards her brother and we also see her adapt her role in society and in her family. We see an immediate change in his opinion of his brother that becomes stronger and stronger throughout the story. He begins to see his brother no longer as his brother. It starts when he gets angry because Gregor came out from under the sofa. If she still considered him her brother she would be willing to see him. He began to treat it simply as a pet, but not even that. She started treating it like something she needs to take care of but doesn't like anymore. In fact, he doesn't even want it to be there. At the end of the story, Grete officially no longer considers him a living being. He expresses this to his father, who begins to have difficulty dealing with Gregor's situation. “It must go,” cried the sister, “just like this, father” (Kafka 53). She tells him that the bug is not Gregor, that Gregor is dead. We also see Grete go through a role change. Now that Gregor is no longer responsible for the family's finances, the other three f...... middle of paper ......and boarders and housekeeper behave towards Gregor. He tells them to leave immediately, which stuns them. This symbolizes a transformation in the dad. Become more tolerant of people – and insects – who are different. The metamorphosis that the father goes through due to Gregor's changes is great, both mentally and physically. In conclusion, the changes we go through as individuals often force others to change their roles and personalities to accommodate our changes. For example, if there is a family where only the father works and he is laid off, the mother may have to find a small job until the father can rejoin a large company. In the Samsas' case, the son, who was the main source of money for the family, tuned into a bugging device. This changed the roles of the father and sister in the family, as well as their personalities and attitudes towards Gregor and society.
