1. Introduction Work-related internal email sometimes blurs the line between spoken language and written English, as it may entertain groups of people in different locations at a shared business event while offering limited rigor on styles and formalities. For example, a company-wide internal outbound activity that collects email opinions may involve both grammatically complex texts and speech-oriented type texts with a single simple sentence. . The article observes and concludes some aspects of the language characteristics of a group of internal problem solving emails developed from the same topic (in total 36 emails), which were collected in Hong Kong by the daily operations service, market data feed feeds, from the Finical and Risk departments of Thomson Reuters Corporation, one of the world's leading media and information companies, based on the analysis of elements of the language used from the perspective of metafunctions, (Haliday 2004) and discussions on their possible contributions to convey meanings and constitute texts. According to Amrin (2004), metafunction, which conceptually originates from the systemic functional grammar (Haliday) approach, could be technically specified into three functions: ideational, interpersonal and textual. That is, “representing the experience”, “exchanging experiences” and “organizing the experience”. Therefore, the presented results and the discussion on the linguistic features used will be criticized mainly based on the three functions. However, while observing and analyzing the metafunctions with the tool of discourse and adopting face-to-face conversation measures to ensure the correctness of the interpretation, the results suggested in this article may in a certain sense lack conviction due to: 1) knowledge limited in the technical field, 2) limited knowledge of the culture and communication habits of the Thomson Reuters Corporation, and 3) small
