The journey of peasant life, through the Middle Ages, was hard. The farmer's life was hard and neither easy nor respected. The farmer's work was never appreciated by the upper social classes. Peasant life should be recognized for the work and impact it has had on British history. The peasants of the Middle Ages were farmers, serfs and carpenters. They would do all the jobs to provide for their family. According to Dianne Zarlengo “their class constituted the economic backbone of society” (10). The peasants were unable to choose the life they wanted to live. “Although the oppressed peasant class largely accepted the hard life as a way to purify their souls and help pave the way to eternal salvation, the peasants occasionally rebelled” (Zarlengo 13). Most people were born into peasant life and from there their life became very hard. The social order that the peasants found themselves in showed that they were considered worthless. They were below every social class of this time. “The peasant class was the lowest rung of the medieval social ladder” (Zarlengo 11). Since their social order was at the lowest level, the upper classes did not respect them much. “Even though farmers provided the labor that allowed society to survive, they were often despised by the wealthier classes” (Zarlengo 10). Even though the peasants belonged to a lower class, they were still able to meet their family's needs. The daily life of a farmer was extremely difficult. Many worked as farmers on fields owned by wealthier landowners. They would work too hard without getting paid. According to Earle Jr. Rice, “farmers worked the lord's land two or three days a week and their own land the rest of the week” (35). Farm life was about working and paying forever......middle of paper......I couldn't have gone ahead and operated without the help of farmers and that's why farm life has to be recognized in British History.
