Restless Legs Syndrome is a neurological disorder that affects the limbs of the body creating a sensation of tingling, itching, pins and needles, and other unpleasant sensations in the arms or legs. ("Restless Legs Syndrome") These sensations make it difficult to fall asleep because they create the need to move to make the unpleasant sensation go away. It usually affects the legs more than the arms, hence the name "restless legs syndrome." (“Restless Legs Syndrome”) “The National Sleep Foundation has identified restless legs syndrome as a leading cause of insomnia” (Rosen). Very few doctors are aware of restless legs syndrome, so approximately 10% of the population is undiagnosed with this disorder, but only 2-3% receive treatment for this disorder. The approximate number of people diagnosed with restless legs syndrome is seventy million (“sleep disorder).
