Translated from the Ancient Greek word “Phobos,” meaning “irrational fear” (Beck, Emery & Greenberg, 2005), a phobia is classified as an anxiety disorder ( American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2000) because the state of heightened anxiety is a dysfunctional and inappropriate behavioral response (British United Provident Association Limited [BUPA], 2010). The reason this inappropriate fear response occurs is that the phobic individual perceives the stimulus as more threatening than it actually is (LeDoux, 1993; Techman, Stefanicci, Clerkin, Cody & Proffitt, 2008; Clerkin, Cody, Stefanucci, Proffitt & Techman, 2009). However, because the individual perceives the stimulus as threatening, and therefore believes it to be dangerous, phobias are believed to develop as a consequence of learned negative associations (LeDoux, 1993; Techman, Stefanicci, Clerkin, Cody & Proffitt, 2008; Clerkin, Cody, Stefanucci, Proffitt & Techman, 2009).
