Topic > Distrust and Pain in Secrets: Jane Eyre - 1078

In the book Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, secrets cause much distrust towards the holder of the secret and grief to those who hold or discover the secret with examples found in secrets such as Rochester's are really the gypsy, Jane's secret reading place, Mrs. Reed who keeps Jane's letter, and Mr. Rochester's wife in the attic. When Mr. Rochester is disguised as a gypsy and tells women about these mysterious fortunes, in some cases this hurts some mentally, but mostly in Jane's case it leads to distrust of Mr. Rochester. When John discovers Jane's secret reading spot, he increasingly loses faith in the so-called "bad boy" and causes Jane the pain of knowing she no longer has a safe place in Gateshead. Once Jane discovers that Mrs. Reed has kept her uncle's letter from her, she loses almost all of her declining faith in her. Finally, when Jane finds out that Mr. Rochester is married, it is what causes Jane to leave him due to lack of trust, and also grieves Mr. Rochester for the loss of his beloved Jane. But let's not get ahead of ourselves and talk in more detail about Mr. Rochester and his time as a gypsy. To begin with, when Mr. Rochester secretly returns to Thornfield as a gypsy, he tells many fortunes but when the secret comes out there is nothing but distrust for him. For example, when Jane discovers that Mr. Rochester was the gypsy, and Mr. Rochester asks her if she can forgive him for his trick, she says, "[She] can't tell until [she] [has] thought it all through" . … [she] will try to forgive him; but it wasn't right¨ (Bronte 213). This proves that Jane had lost some faith in her beloved Rochester because of such a simple prank and it was the fact that the secret was kept from her, which makes Jane really wonder if it could be true... middle of paper.. ....lose some of Jane's trust. Once Jane's secret hideout was discovered by John Reed, she lost any chance of trust with John in Gateshead and was hurt physically, mentally and emotionally by his secret. When Jane found out, Mrs. Reed hid the letter from Jane, any hope of trust between the two of them was demolished, and Jane was also saddened and hurt by the secret. Finally, when Jane found out about Mr. Rochester's wife on the third floor, the relationship of love and trust between Rochester and Jane had weakened to the point that Jane had no choice but to leave, and this had created a situation full of profound pain. for both. This all goes to show the impact on trust and feelings that secrets have on relationships in this book and in our world. Works Cited Brontë, Charlotte. Jane Eyre.
