Topic > Designer Comparison - 866

For my comparison document I had a hard time deciding who I could really compare mine to, the work I do consists mainly of 2D elements printed onto a 3D object, focusing mainly on design of the clothing. Most of my work involves designing packaging or t-shirts for bands. There are many designers out there, most of them self-taught, working in the clothing design market, with so many out there choosing someone to compare my work to was not easy. Graphic designer Kelly Scott Orr is currently the in-house designer for Drive Thru Records based in Los Angeles, this record label essentially created the pop punk genre that is so popular today. He also owns and designs clothing for his company Burn This Forever, is in the band Teen Hearts, and does commissioned work on a client basis. The reason I chose Kelly is because he and I share a similar design style and our designs are aimed at a younger audience. In this article I will compare and contrast the social, visual and physical elements of my clothing designs to his. Socially our designs share the idea that these t-shirts are designed to be a sellable product that will appeal to a certain youth demographic, some would say this demographic would be males and females aged 12-25 who enjoy a specific gender of music and a style somewhat associated with the hipster culture that is popular today. The success of these projects relies on creating visually appealing graphics tied to type, primarily company or band identity, and highly saturated hues. We both share the drive to start our own company and promote the brand; this can be seen in the attached Burn This Forever photo, as well as in my Nevernood clothing line. In contrast, my work is mostly......half drawings on paper......t, most of my projects could be considered budget projects consisting mostly of 2 color drawings( 3). There is something business or a bit of chaos in Kelly's designs that give the viewer a lot to look at and understand; my designs tend to be more minimal and the company name is the most present element of the design. When it comes to the physical aspects of our work it is very similar, projects are done in programs like Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. They are printed with the same screen-printed method with the same plasticizing ink. The designs are printed on apparel consisting primarily of t-shirts and hoodies, but can range from a variety of 3D objects. I'm not entirely sure how the physical elements of this contrast because they are essentially 2D designs printed on a 3D form of clothing and printed the same way in the same medium.
