Topic > Social Contract Theory by Thomas Hobbes - 971

In Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes expounds the hypothetical principle of the state of nature, where the human being himself is artificial. It is human nature that people are unable to love permanently, free-for-all, power among the strongest. In this nation-state you have to be the strongest to survive (survival of the fittest). To survive there are laws we must follow, to ensure our safety due to fear. We have managed to suppress our fear, creating order, to have more order; we must have security, this is how the social contract appeared. Thomas Hobbes implies the idea of social contract to solve the problem of war and disorder. If the social contract did not exist, the law would not exist. If there were no law, citizens would do what they want. If so, citizens will ignore traffic signs, traffic lights, restriction signs, and so on. I agreed with the idea of the social contract because it is very similar to the Declaration of Independence. It was a treaty approved and approved by the 13 states. It's a proposal that's been worked out and all 13 colonies sign because they have total agreement. If this Constitution were not drafted, I believe we would still be at war and become a weak/corrupt nation. For a law to work, people have given up their freedom. In return, the ruler will decide what is right and what is wrong. The only freedom we can maintain is freedom of defense. We cannot have the freedom to do what we want because if we break the law we will become outlaws. Freedom leads to the idea of desire, of wanting something, based on something we don't have. The human being is a machine of desire. If we want something, we will find a way to get what we want. Thomas...... middle of paper ...... to become an outlaw, you need to judge to survive. Every man defends himself for the sake of survival. According to Hobbes “the agreement of these creatures is natural; that of men occurs only by agreement, which is artificial; and therefore, it is no wonder that something else (besides the covenant) is necessary to make their agreement constant and lasting…” (page 109). That won't change because it is what it is. Finally, to improve the law and its governance we must have an established sovereign state. According to Hobbes, if there is a war, the ruler can change the law, which also explains why the Bill of Right was constantly revised throughout the year. To become powerful and survive we must go through the ordeal of fulfilling the contract. By following the contract we are able to create peace and have a good life.
