After watching Singapore Dreaming, Money No Enough and My Magic, I identified 5 Singapore-style values. These include filial piety, eternal love, friendship, determination and education. The first value is filial piety. The act of filial piety was depicted in Hui's Money No Enough, starring Henry Thia. Hui is single and lives with his mother. Furthermore, he has three older sisters. Hui's mother fainted during the opening ceremony of her car polishing business. She was later diagnosed with leukemia and must remain in hospital for treatment. Due to high hospital bills, the three sisters were not willing to shell out the large sum of money, even though they are richer and more affluent. The reason they gave was absurd, stating that since she was little, their mother loves Hui the most and therefore should pay all the hospital expenses. They also said they were already married and had a family of their own. Therefore, Hui should be solely responsible for caring for his elderly mother. Hui tried to get financial aid, but was rejected repeatedly because his sisters are rich. Although he felt it was unfair of him to pay all the hospitalization expenses, he did not complain much and continued to visit his mother in hospital whenever he could until her death. He also managed to pay all of his mother's hospitalization expenses and eventually organized his mother's wake. The second value is eternal love. The act of everlasting love was shown in all three films. In Singapore Dreaming, Siew Luan gave some money to her son just before the job interview because he doesn't have a job yet and the money can help him for a while. Furthermore, Poh Huat volunteered to pay for his son's wedding, no matter how much...half of the card...is to earn money and give his son a better life. Before he died he bequeathed his son several thousand dollars in cash. The fifth value is the importance of education in the eyes of employers. In Singapore Dreaming, Seng said he earned a bachelor's degree from Dubois Polytechnic University in Idaho, United States. However, the institute is not recognized in Singapore and the company ultimately decided not to hire him. In Money No Enough, Keong failed to get a promotion despite being an experienced worker because he has weak English. His boss hired a recent graduate as a manager because he is younger and well educated. Keong has decided to quit his job and hopes to find another. He was unsuccessful because he only has a GCE O Level certificate while other people struggling for the same job as him have a bachelor's or master's degree.
