Cohen (2002) points out that although popular culture can be used to raise awareness, there are also ongoing connotations that follow each medium. For example, folk music is stereotyped as “hippy” music. Another aspect of music being used as a platform for social change is the idea of commercialization. Commercializing a song or genre can result in an impactful song addressing issues transitioning into a popular song due to popularity. A great example of this is the recent song written by Macklemore – Thrift Shop. The original purpose of this song was to address the issue of consumerism and westernized values. However it gained traction online and quickly lost its value and became a "hit" song simply due to its mass circulation; unfortunately not for the intended purpose
