History repeats itself The story begins in 1927, when Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs in a single season. This number was an astonishing number at the time, which they believed would never be surpassed. This wasn't just a record-breaking moment, it was a moment that brought attention and attention to baseball, "America's favorite pastime." This number stood for thirty-three years and was never beaten, until a young New York Yankee from Fargo named Roger Maris entered the scene. In 1961, after battling with teammate Mickey Mantle, he put on a show fighting for Ruth's record. Mantle failed due to injury, but Roger went on to break that record by hitting an impressive 61 home runs. Baseball fans around the world were shocked and could only wonder: This too will be broken, who will break it and when? Baseball fans everywhere would have to wait another 37 years to find out; but nevertheless they do it! The year is now 1998 and I'm a 13 year old sitting in front of the television watching a man named Marc McQwire try to break a record that I didn't know much about at the time. On September 8, 1998, Marc broke Maris' 37-year-old record by hitting 62 homeruns, and then was on his way to a 70-homerun season. It was a sad day for the Maris family to see the late Roger Maris' record broken, but for baseball it meant a second coming. Baseball was in trouble after the strike, so this brought people back to the game, just to get a glimpse of history. Today McQwires record doesn't even stand, it was broken 3 years after he set it..
