School financing is a recurring issue in the modern era. Debates ranging from giving more money to schools, to eliminating the existing system and reforming a new idea have plagued the world over the years. “The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, signed into law in 2009, provided more than $100 billion in education aid to offset budget cuts…” (School Finance). Subsequently, “Congress provided an additional $10 billion in 2010 to avoid mass teacher layoffs (Education Week, “Total Recovery Act”)” (School Funding). These numbers are just one example of the difficulties in funding the school, which is costing a lot of money to stay afloat. “There are many ways schools fund, varying from state to state and even school to school. Income taxes, corporate taxes, sales taxes, and other taxes provide 48 percent of elementary and secondary school funding. 44% of local districts derive money from local property taxes. The federal government accounts for about 8% of state education budgets. These funds are distributed on a per-student basis and categorically to ensure sufficient resources for each special program or facility” (School Funding). These funds play a huge role in every student's education, both positive and negative. The three main areas that need to be addressed in the school budget are extracurricular funding, building and equipment maintenance, and last but not least, staff funding. “One way to better understand school finance is to think of it in terms of adequacy and equity of resources. Adequacy is based on the principle that states should provide sufficient funding for all students to meet academic expectations” (School Funding). The average expenditure per student in 2008 was 10.0297 and then varied from a maximum of 11.572 to Ne...... half of the paper ......earn the material. Most schools allocate the money they get to the best of their ability, but they need more money to use for these basic and important needs. Overall, the School Budget Committee needs to start from the bottom and fund what is needed and needed to get schools back on their feet. These easily solvable problems are a critical part of school financing and should be addressed appropriately.
