Topic > The Challenges of Religious Pluralism - 1174

For centuries, religion in America has been more of a family affair. This means that despite the different groupings, almost all major religions have been united under the same American experience. Almost all major religious denominations have been required to conform to the dictates of Protestantism. Perhaps this stems from the belief that nearly all of these groups were responsible for the formation of America as we know it today. However, many things have happened in the last few decades that have changed the way religions have behaved. A theme that has changed a lot over the years is that of pluralism. For many years America has been a haven for diverse groups of people. British immigration brought with it a different ideology as they lacked the unification of their religious beliefs. This essay seeks to show how the Roman Catholic Church adapted to the challenge of religious pluralism in the American republic by modifying European notions of religious tradition. Adaptations of traditions within the Roman Catholic Church allowed them to be relevant within communities. If there is a single religious group that has maintained its beliefs in a rapidly changing world, it is the Roman Catholic Church. The Catholic Church is perhaps the largest denomination in the world. To this day, the church maintains the teachings practiced since the beginning. With the British colonization of America, most churches abandoned their morals or had to change them a bit to conform to the English church's belief in morality. The Catholic Church in what is called “moral theology” has continually supported morality in society. This theory is closely linked to the nature...... middle of paper ......es on the Church's claim to pluralism. Due to the enormous influence that the British have, the Catholic Church was forced to modify some of its teachings and beliefs to withstand the challenges brought by the British notion of religious notion. From the issue of conceiving children to marriage, it is seen that there are many changes introduced in the Catholic Church. At the rate the practice progresses, we will see more changes made in this way if the church wants to remain relevant in the community. However, the good thing to note is that we are only seeing a modification of some beliefs and not a complete overhaul of key religious practices. Works Cited Williams, Peter W.
