The play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, explores the darkest corners of the human psyche. He cleverly takes his audience to a place that allows them to examine what a human being is truly capable of once tempted by the allure of power. In the play, the Scottish nobleman Macbeth and his wife inevitably fall prey to their own self-corruption. Driven by the prophecies made by three mysterious witches, the Macbeths aim for the throne. When the curtain rises on the plot to kill King Duncan, Lady Macbeth is the driving force. Her criminal mind and desire for ruthlessness have led many critics to call her evil. Closer examination, however, reveals that he is a multifaceted character; other sides of her personality include: genuine goodwill towards her husband, shy manipulation and feminine tenderness. One of Lady Macbeth's commonly overlooked traits is her kindness, especially towards her husband, Macbeth. This goodness is first evident upon its introduction; while reading the letter written to her by Macbeth. The letter tells of the three witches, whom Macbeth calls the strange sisters, and a prophecy concerning Macbeth's future kingdom. Immediately Lady Macbeth desires the throne for her husband. You can feel not only the desire, but also the determination. Worried that Macbeth would not be able to take the quickest route to the throne by killing the current King Duncan, Lady Macbeth summons evil spirits to strip her of her weaker feminine qualities. She says:[U]nsex me here, and fill me from head to toe with the most atrocious cruelty! make my blood thick; close the access and passage to remorse, that no scrupulous visitation of nature shall shake my evil purpose, nor keep the peace between the effect and it! (I... in the middle of the paper... yes, I see a complete transformation in her character. Her inevitable femininity, combined with the unbearable remorse for Duncan's murder and many other indirect murders, torments her. She cannot she rests in peace, reliving her crimes even while she sleeps, and is deeply unhappy, in fact, Lady Macbeth fails to maintain both her sanity and her intrinsic tenderness, leading her first to madness and then to suicide. To conclude, Lady Macbeth she is a woman with a thousand facets of character, her person has many sides; in particular: genuine goodness towards her husband, shy manipulation and femininity. It is therefore inaccurate to define her as purely evil despite the means with which she wishes to achieve her fantastic purpose, enthusiasm and determination. in the end she loses her dominant role, a prisoner until her inescapable femininity disappears.
