For as long as I can remember I have been continually inspired by the natural world around me. As a child I was always scavenging for objects in the neighborhood and fashioning them into a proud display of what I can only imagine is an innate bond between man and the earth. When I met Andy Goldsworthy early in college, I felt an immediate connection to his work. It wasn't so much that I wanted to emulate exactly what he was doing. What it did for me was validate a way of working away from the modern world and technology that I had long resisted. I am still experimenting with a wide range of media in my work. I haven't yet found a niche that I fit perfectly into and so I would like to focus on one work in particular that I feel resonates with Goldsworthy's body of work. That piece is a sculptural painting made with a found object, wooden board, plant materials, spray paint, crayons, mud and glue. It's called Strange Lark, named after one of his favorite songs. At first glance it may seem that Goldsworthy is making a profound social commentary on our estrangement from nature or the world....
