“…building a tank the size of Rhode Island would not be big enough for a six-ton male killer whale like Tilikum, an animal capable of swimming 100 miles a day,” says an anonymous person whale expert. Whales have been in captivity since 1861, when PT Barnum showed the first live whale captured in Canada. However, Barnum had no idea how to care for the mammal and it died after just a week in captivity. (Animal Legal and Historical Center, 2014) Being in close contact with killer whales could give us some clues about how they interact with each other, including physical behavior, their dialect, and how their pods work together as a family unit. However, what we are finding is that whales living in the wild are suffering in captivity. Orcas are not known to have ever harmed a human in the wild. In captivity, there have been many incidents where orcas have harmed or even killed their trainers. What would drive them to do this in captivity, but not in the wild? They are known to resort to aggression towards themselves and others, in what scientists believe to be stress-induced behaviour. (Animal Legal and Historical Center, 2014) The evidence against keeping these wild animals in captivity is growing, and we must reevaluate the value of capturing and keeping killer whales for our purposes of education, entertainment, and profit. Captivity is a term that has a range of definitions. The least restrictive solution would be an enclosed area that attempts to meet the physical, social, physical and medical needs of these animals. The most restrictive provide a limited area for movement and social interaction and do not provide the regular medical care needed. When we refer to the orca dialect we are talking about... middle of paper ......the mistakes we have made and doing our best to correct what is now wrong.
