Roe v. Wade is one of the most important decisions ever made by the United States Supreme Court. This case has impacted the lives of so many people and I believe no other topic related to the feminist movement has produced so much debate, anger and passion. Abortion has always been a controversy between old and young, between rich and poor. No matter who you are, you have an opinion on this topic and it is most likely a strong one. The controversy arises from the fact that there are so many different positions one can take on the topic (USHistory.org). This article will discuss the entire case, from how it all began to how it has affected the law today. Perhaps after understanding the whole case in depth, you can make an informed decision about what your opinion on the matter is. When the United States became an independent nation from England, English common law was followed by most of the then states which did not allow abortion after the mother could feel the baby's movements in her stomach. This moment when a mother feels her baby move is described as an acceleration. Before 1973, it was up to the state to decide whether or not abortion should be legal in their specific state. For example, Connecticut, in 1821, passed a law that made it more difficult for apothecaries to carry out the business of selling poisons to women to intentionally terminate their pregnancies. Additionally, in 1829, New York made it a crime to terminate a pregnancy after acceleration and a misdemeanor to have an abortion before acceleration. Many people argue that these laws were not enacted out of ethical concerns, but out of concerns about the safety of the method used.
