Plastic surgery has been around since 800 BC. Many adults view such procedures as a benefit to themselves; however would you allow your child to consider it to mask his shortcomings? According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, nearly 210,000 cosmetic surgeries were performed on adolescents between the ages of 13 and 19 in 2009 (Thompson). Low self-esteem has led some teens to choose plastic surgery as a confidence boost. This should not be considered an option for teenagers without knowing the consequences it can bring. Therefore, parents should not allow their teenagers to undergo plastic surgery. Rhinoplasty and breast implants are common procedures that many teenagers undergo to satisfy their insecurities. “Nearly 35,000 US teenagers had nose reshaping surgery last year and about 8,000 girls between the ages of 13 and 19 had breast augmentation last year (2009) and 2,953 of them were 18 or younger ” (Thompson). Dr. Antell says he isn't sure whether or not a teenager will continue to grow. Avoid doing the surgery because the destruction of the human body will cause more problems. Harming a young girl's body will not only make her look deformed but also more self-conscious. “Breast implants are a dark area because you're not sure if the teenager has stopped growing yet” (Wansbrough). This not only applies to breast implants but also to rhinoplasty, liposuction and injections. The body grows and plastic surgery has long-term effects. “The key perspective is to evaluate physical, emotional and psychological maturity before treating a patient” (Wansbrough). To get diagnosed with their desired surgery, teens need to ask themselves: Are they ready for the procedure? The doctor will ask a series of questions and look at the middle of the paper to realize that they are too young to undergo plastic surgery. The world would be different if you changed everything others didn't like about you, so teenagers need to be influenced to like them because they were born that way. There may be physical changes, but real change begins with who I am on the inside (Wansbrough). Works Cited “Is Cosmetic Surgery Good for Teens.” Body image. Np: Greenhaven Press, 2003. Page no.
